Democrats in the US Senate are proposing a new tax on opioids in an attempt to reduce abuse of these powerful painkiller drugs. Their approach is modeled on the increases to cigarette taxes as a way to increase the costs of smoking to discourage the habit. But to the workers compensation system, this will just mean another increase in medical costs to the system.
