Tesla is the largest manufacturer of electric cars in the world. But the company doesn’t make a profit selling cars, they make their profit selling carbon credits to other auto manufacturers.
Their cars are actually pretty cool. They have insane acceleration speeds and all sorts of technology tools.
Consumer Reports Knocks Tesla for Reliability
In 2015, Consumer Reports put out the reliability report on electric vehicles. While the Tesla S gets high marks for fuel efficiency, and performance, their survey received many responses highlighting reliability problems. At a base price of $70,000 before subsidies and rebates, that’s a lot of money to spend on a car that spends a lot of time in the repair garage.
Tesla Driver Asleep at the Wheel
One of the features of Tesla automobiles is their self-driving capabilities. While Tesla says truly self-driving capabilities are a few years away, the current Model S does have some auto-driving features:
- The Model S can self-steer itself on the highway at up to 70 miles per hour.
- It can maintain a constant speed
- Keep an appropriate distance from cars around you
- Keep you in your driving lane
While Tesla says that you can’t yet punch in your destination and sit back and take a nap, it appears something almost like that recently happened in Califonia. This YouTube video below shows the driver in a Model S sleeping at the wheel while his car slowly moves along with the rush hour traffic:
As someone in the insurance business, this is a pretty scary scenario. Even if the car can drive safely by itself, I just can’t get my head around someone asleep at the wheel of their car.
HBO’s Silicon Valley Makes Fun of Tesla Cars
However, if you want to see a pretty hilarious take on the self-driving car, you must see the scene from Season 2 of HBO’s Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is a comedy show about the trials and tribulations of tech entrepreneurs. The totally mock every aspect of the tech industry, the people that work in it, the Silicon Valley culture and tech companies. Here one of the characters is given a ride home in a driverless car and the unintended consequences of what can happen when technology runs amok:
